Seems to work fine and do the job well.
We were recently given a set of Knog Scout luggage tags, but unfortunately since we are Android people we had to regift our to a friend with an iPhone. Based on his through review we cannot wait until these are available for Android. So without further ado, here is his review:
Summary: reliable, good functionality and App, poor attachment design. Overall 4.5 / 5 Stars
On my very last trip to Alabama, my checked bag got lost for 20 min until I realized that someone else had pulled it off the carousel and piled it amongst their 5 other bags for their family. A product like the Scout luggage tag would have made it easy to immediately locate my bag and avoid the hassle. More importantly, it would have allowed me to alert the person if they took it with them by sounding an alarm. For this reason alone I recommend the product but warn anyone buying one to be patient with assembly.
Unpacking and evaluating the tag itself: the sleekly designed tag is available in muted colors (I got one army green and one black) comes in a recycled paper packaging with some instructions on the package. The user manual is available by booping a QR code on the package. Other items in the package are 2 different length attachment cables, the attachment hub, and a sturdy metal key that also has the device QR code. The tag plastic feels robust and there is a water resistant flap covering the USB-C charging port. A small reset button on the bottom is just recessed enough to shield it from inevitable rubbing during luggage handling. A red LED signals charging, pairing, and can be set to strobe to alert either the user or anyone else. My immediate reaction is that this is a sturdy, reliable device that will stand up to my weekly flight itinerary.
Digital user manual and the App: The manual is well drawn with an IKEA level of user friendliness to get you going in no time setting up the Knog App and pairing is super easy. You can rename the tag, and set parameters such as motion alarm with different sensitivities, chose different alarm tones, vibration on/off, and emergency disarm with or without mobile device. (I chose to allow without). I couldn’t find a way to download additional alarm tones, so that might be a welcome firmware update down the road, although the standard ones are just fine for achieving the task. I tried the alarm on various settings and it is sure to get your attention along with everyone else in the airport!
Manual interface and attachment set up: here is the big opportunity for improvement. Attaching the tag to your luggage is done by unscrewing a plastic “hub” with metal covers on each side. The metal key fob is needed to do this step. Not a big deal if you read the instructions but it is counter intuitive. Once unscrewed, you have to separate the metal covers from the plastic hub halves. This is not detailed in the usermanual and required finagling with a two screwdrivers, a pair of vicegrips and my thumbnail. Once separated, the attachment cable has swages on each end, which must be pushed into notches in the plastic hubs. This step is easy to do, but it’s very sensitive and hard to keep notched. Next, the plastic hubs must be inserted into the tag with each cable end pushed into the swage notch, then the metal covers pushed into place, and screwed down using the metal key.
Sound complicated? Yep, it is! Oh, and I’ll bet 50/50% that you forget to actually thread the cable through your luggage and have to undo and redo half this process. My guess is that this design was motivated by the fear of thieves simply unhooking the Scout tag and absconding with your dirty laundry and chintzy souvenirs. Bravo! However, the attachment cable is about 22 guage diameter and would be easy to snip using a $4 pair of wirecutters. I verified this with the left over (shorter) cable in about 5 seconds. My fix is to put a drop of superglue on each side of the attachment cable in the swage notch. This will, unfortunately, permanently fix what you attach it to, so chose wisely!
The frustration with attachment is not too bad once you get the hang of it, and only needs to be done the one time for setup, and again if you ever want to switch luggage. Overall the utility, reliability and well designed App make this a high value-added product.
Scout Travel offers the best value for money. It combines an Apple AirTag, an anti-theft alarm and a QR tag in one. It's simply unbeatable.
With my up coming travel overseas alone I thought I should protect myself and my luggage with peace of mind. The size is not too big and the colour is amazing, can’t wait to put it to use…
Android users total around 70% of the global market, but your tags only cater to the 40% of the global market for Apple users?
For an Australian company (which is where I am and was prepped to order 7 for Android users) that's a rather disappointing discovery.
Android users can't use the Apple Airtag as it's obviously for Apple users only.
And Android users can't use you guys either and the market at 70% for Android should be saturated with tags for us to use.
Apparently not.
